Ashley Sheekey

Ashley Sheekey is an artist based in Brighton, UK.
I make work (drawings, ceramics, writing, collaborative projects) that explores my interest in the urban environment. I am especially intrigued by the overlap between public and private space, and the presence of generous and hostile design.
At the moment
This past summer I spent seven weeks in Denmark as an apprentice at Hjorths Fabrik; a ceramic factory and museum that dates back to mid-19th century . To spend these weeks focussed on improving my throwing skills, learning more about gas firing, and getting a good view of the way a production pottery runs was such a special opportunity that I am so grateful to have had.
Following on from this experience, I am back in my own studio beginning to develop a collection of tableware. For a while I have been looking to pin down a few forms that satisfy me for functional pieces (with jugs in particular ), and will be using the skills learned on my apprenticeship to make this happen.
I am very happy to be continuing to work with The House. Two of my stoneware jugs with slip petals are on display in their lovely East London gallery space, alongside their current show, The Feast.
A second iteration of my ongoing collaborative project, COMMON PLACE is also in progress.
